Wire-Free vs Underwire While Breastfeeding: Why We Don't Do Wires

Wire-free vs underwire while breastfeeding: why we don't do wires
Your body changes shape several times a day while breastfeeding. A wire doesn't move with it. Here's what actually holds you up in a wire-free nursing bra.
Almost every woman we fit arrives with the same question. If I take the wire out, what holds me up? It's a fair question. A wire is the most visible piece of engineering in a bra, and it's also the piece that stops working the moment you start feeding.
Quick answer
B Free doesn't put wires in nursing bras. A breastfeeding mom's body changes shape and size several times a day, and a wire is built for one fixed shape. Support instead comes from knitted-in fabric zones, a firm wide underband, and a broad back panel, so the bra keeps fitting as your body changes. Wire-free maternity and nursing bras are made up to a G cup.
What the wire is actually for
A wire does one job: it holds a cup shape from the outside. It lifts by bracing against the ribcage and creating a fixed perimeter for the breast to sit inside. That works well as long as the breast stays the same size as the perimeter.
It is a rigid solution to a problem that stops being rigid the day your milk comes in.
Why the wire becomes the problem
Between late pregnancy and the end of feeding, most women move through three or four cup sizes. Not once. Repeatedly. You are one size before a feed and another size after it, and different again at 3am.
A wire can't follow that. It sits where it was built to sit, so it ends up pressing where it shouldn't, riding forward off the ribcage, or gaping at the top when you're between sizes. Women tell us the same three things: it digs, it rubs, and it's the first thing they want off at the end of the day. If a bra causes you soreness or pain while feeding, stop wearing it and talk to your midwife, lactation consultant or doctor.
The short version
A wire fits one version of you. Feeding gives you a new one every few hours.
What a wire-free nursing bra uses instead
Take the wire out and the support has to be built into the fabric itself. That's what seamless circular knit does. The bra is knitted as one continuous tube, with support zones knitted directly into it: firmer under the bust, firmer across the back, softer everywhere it touches you.
The body is knitted as one continuous seamless panel. No seams, no tags across the parts that touch you most. Because knitted support stretches and recovers, the bra fits the size you are right now, not the size you were at your fitting.
- -Flexi-sizing. One bra spans a range of cups, so it carries you through the change instead of being outgrown by it.
- -One-hand drop-down clips. Because the other hand is holding a baby.
- -Viscose bamboo. Breathable and soft on sensitive skin, for a garment worn eighteen hours a day.
- -Removable pads. Shape when you want it, room for breast pads when you need it.

Does a wire-free nursing bra support a larger bust?
This is the objection we hear most, and it's usually based on a bad experience with a soft crop top sold as a nursing bra. A crop top has no engineering in it. A knitted support bra does.
The work is done by a wide, firm underband, which is where lift comes from in any bra wired or not, plus a broad back panel that stops straps cutting in, and cushioned straps that spread the load rather than concentrating it. Our wire-free nursing styles run to a G cup for exactly this reason.

When to buy a maternity and nursing bra, and how many you need
As soon as you know you're pregnant. There's no such thing as too early. Your body starts changing from the first weeks, skin gets more sensitive and stretches, and a wire is the first thing that starts to feel wrong. Most women who make the switch early tell us the same thing: once you feel the difference, you don't go back to wires.
Order your current dress size. Our cup will adjust with you. As your band grows through pregnancy, add a bra extender to keep the same bra comfortable for longer instead of buying up a size.
Three to six is realistic. The more the better once you account for leaks and burps. This stage lasts a while: nine months of pregnancy, then feeding on top, and some moms nurse for up to two years. It's personal, but this isn't an easy stage of life, so treat yourself to the comfort.
A good approach: start with a viscose bamboo three pack as your everyday basic, then try a few others from the range for different occasions: the invisible style, the cushion strap for extra shoulder relief, or a fixed-pad style. A variety keeps you comfortable whatever the day calls for.

Common questions
Do B Free nursing bras have underwire?
No. B Free nursing and maternity bras are wire-free. Support comes from knitted-in fabric zones instead of a rigid wire, so the bra keeps fitting as breast size changes through feeding.
Can you wear an underwire bra while breastfeeding?
You can, but many women find it uncomfortable. A wire is sized to one fixed shape, and a breastfeeding mom's body changes size several times a day. If you do wear one, make sure the wire sits flat on the ribcage and never presses into breast tissue. Speak to your midwife, lactation consultant or doctor if you notice any soreness.
Why are wire-free nursing bras recommended?
Because a wire-free bra moves with you. Support comes from the fabric and the band rather than a rigid frame, so the bra keeps fitting as your size shifts through the day, through let-down, and through the first year.
When should I buy my first nursing bra?
As soon as you know you're pregnant. It's never too early. Skin gets more sensitive and stretches from early on, and a flexi-sized wire-free bra has enough give to carry you comfortably through those changes and beyond.
How many nursing bras do I need?
Three to six. The more the better, given leaks and burps. It's personal, and it needs to last: nine months of pregnancy plus however long you nurse, which for some moms is up to two years. Start with a viscose bamboo three pack as your everyday basic, then add other styles from the range for different occasions.
Does a wire-free bra give enough support for a larger bust?
Yes. Support in a seamless bra is knitted in, with engineered zones under the bust and across the back doing the work a wire would otherwise do. Our wire-free nursing styles are made to a G cup.
What size should I order?
Order your current dress size. Our cup will adjust with you. As your band grows through pregnancy, add a bra extender to keep the same bra fitting comfortably for longer.
Is viscose bamboo better for nursing bras?
Viscose bamboo is soft, breathable and moisture-managing, which matters when a bra is on for eighteen hours a day. It's also gentle on skin that's already sensitive from feeding.
No seams. No tags. No wires.
